School installs sign to help boy with autism communicate on playground

FENTON, MO (KMOX) - There's a new sign in the Kellison Elementary School playground in Fenton to help an autistic boy communicate with his classmates.

Blake Roedel's mother, Amanda, saw him struggle to talk with his classmates, and asked, "what can we do to help him, help others, understand him?"

Mom contacted the Rockwood District with the idea of a sign with pictures and words Blake and the other kids can all understand; things like "Your Turn," "Slide" and "Swing."

    There are 44 different words.

Blake and the other children just point, and they understand each other. Amanda Roedel says she cried when the school put up the sign for her son.
