LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Across the United States, local governments are seeing their resources affected greatly by the coronavirus pandemic. States are providing financial and medical support to their residents, but as a result of the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, are taking in less tax revenue than usual.

As some states begin to reopen their businesses in stages, they have to work against months of economic damage and millions of job losses as they try to restart their economies.

Some states were more prepared to deal with a crisis than others, and a new analysis shows which states may need the most financial help due to the coronavirus pandemic. Using 18 metrics, WalletHub compared states looking at their rainy-day funds per capita, their debt, and the percentage of their workforces employed in highly-affected industries.

New York, the state hit hardest by COVID-19, has a staggering $13.3 billion budget shortfall, but four other states proved to be in worse financial straits due to the pandemic.

It's no surprise to see Nevada amongst the neediest states, coming in 8th overall.

The only states in worse shape, according to the WalletHub study? Louisiana, Kentucky, Florida, New Hampshire, New York, Illinois and New Jersey.

The three states seen as needing the least amount of financial assistance? Iowa, Wyoming and South Dakota.
