Bono Almost Died in 2016

October 2, 2018

Bono recently told the "Sunday Times" that he nearly died in 2016. He described it as a "major moment," but didn't go into details. He just said, quote, "I nearly ceased to be. It was pretty serious. I'm all right now, but I very nearly wasn't. I've had a lot of warnings. A fair few punches over the last years. There were some serious whispers in the ear that maybe I should have taken notice of." And that's as specific as he got.

He also alluded to it in the liner notes of U2's last album, "Songs of Experience". He said, quote, "I was on the receiving end of a shock to the system. A shock that left me clinging on to my own life. It was an arresting experience. I won't dwell in it or on it. I don't want to name it."

By the way, this apparently has nothing to do with the bike accident that he got into in Central Park, where he fractured his face, and messed up his shoulder. That was in 2015. Also, for what it's worth, Bono was checked for throat cancer back in 2000, but the tests came back negative.
