Captain Beefheart’s ‘Bat Chain Puller’ Gets Official Release

” After 36 years some good comes out of the Captain Beefheart/Frank Zappa rivalry. To honor what would have been Captain Beefheart’s (Don Van Vliet) 71st birthday, the Zappa label will release Bat Chain Puller. Originally recorded and slated for a release in 1976, the LP never saw the light of day due to a legal dispute between Zappa and his manager Herb Cohen.

Though Van Vliet did record a few alternate versions for his 1978 release Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), this is the first time the original recordings will be made available to the public. The disc includes 16 minutes worth of bonus material and contains liner notes from former Captain Beefheart bandmates.

Rock Flashback: Bloody Sunday

On January 30, 1972, in the town of Derry in Northern Ireland, 26 protesters were shot by British police. Fourteen died. The event is remembered as Bloody Sunday. It was probably the most significant event of “the Troubles,” the longstanding conflict in Northern Ireland. Bloody Sunday inspired several rockers to write songs.

Within days of Bloody Sunday, Paul McCartney wrote “Give Ireland Back to the Irish,” which would become a significant hit in the UK despite being banned by the BBC.

McCartney’s old mate John Lennon wrote “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” As their history would indicate, Lennon’s take on the event was more strident and direct than McCartney’s.

Lennon had become active in Irish politics even before Bloody Sunday, and just a week after the shootings, he publicly indicated his support for the Irish marchers during a rally in New York City. He also sang a second song inspired by the events of a week before, “Luck of the Irish.” Here’s a live TV performance.

In 1983, U2 would record the most famous of the songs inspired by Bloody Sunday. Their “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is different from Lennon’s. Here’s a live performance from Rattle and Hum, recorded on the day of another famous event in the history of the Troubles, the Enniskillen bombing of 1987, with a modified lyric mentioning that event.

Last.fm Trends: D’Angelo Makes A Sweet Return

As hiatuses go it’s impressive, but after 12 years D’Angelo looks to be breaking his silence. With YouTube videos of new tracks circulating, fans are hearing their first new material since 2000.

Today Last.fm Trends looks at D’Angelo’s scrobbles on Last.fm, and what 2012 may bring.

The graph above (click to enlarge) shows his weekly scrobbles for the past year. So far there isn’t a comprehensive trend to be found in his weekly scrobbles, but it may take a little more than YouTube videos to get fans really excited again.

So far, D’Angelo has 3,701,176 plays from 350,976 listeners on Last.fm. Tagged with neo-soul, he’s currently somewhere between Raphael Saadiq‘s 252,010 listeners and Maxwell‘s 351,192 listeners as regards his genre peers. With the former having released his debut two years after we last heard from D’Angelo, it’s clear there’s a lot of catching up to do – and the space for scrobbles to rocket.

Last.fm Trends: Kaiser Chiefs Return With New Album And U.S. Tour

Brit band Kaiser Chiefs are to return from their four year break with new album Start The Revolution Without Me.

The album will see the light of day on March 6th – a date which also marks the start of a U.S. tour for the band.

Kaiser Chiefs are known for their sing-along anthems and will surely be making an impression at festivals across the globe in support of the new album. Last.fm Trends takes a retrospective look at their scrobbles so far.

Having formed in 1996 in Leeds, it wasn’t until 2005 that their debut album Employment surfaced. The album was a bonafide success and currently counts 11,799,316 scrobbles.

Tracks such as “I Predict A Riot” (2,710,354 scrobbles) and “Oh My God” (1,774,588 scrobbles) took live audiences by storm and continue to be blasted from Last.fm user’s stereos – the tracks were listened to by 4,190 and 2,673 listeners last week (respectively).

Start The Revolution Without Me was originally released in the UK in June 2011 (as seen with the jump in scrobbles in the below graph) under the title The Future Is Medieval and has been scrobbled 664,164 times. The band released a number of tracks, and asked fans to compile their own tracklisting for the record.

The order of the tracks on the U.S. version has been selected by the band’s label Cooperative, with the band confident that any order will be good enough for their awaiting fans.

Rock Flashback: Suzi Quatro

Although Suzi Quatro was from Detroit, she was never as big a star in the States as she was in the UK, where for a stretch of the 1970s, her records were guaranteed hits. Her American career didn’t really take off until she was cast on one of the most popular shows on TV.

Quatro started hitting in Britain during the glam-rock era. “Can the Can” hit #1 in the UK in 1973; “Devil Gate Drive” would ascend the summit the next year. “Can the Can” was a minor hit in the States (although not until 1976), but “Devil Gate Drive” was both too retro and too rockin’ to cross over to the American charts of 1974. Quatro’s other hits, such as “Daytona Demon” and “48 Crash,” were what their titles implied — straight-up no-frills rock ‘n’ roll, made alluring by Quatro’s bad-girl looks.

In 1977, Quatro was cast as rock singer Leather Tuscadero on the TV series Happy Days. She appeared in only seven episodes, but the exposure gave her career a boost.

She scored her first big American hit in 1979, but “Stumblin’ In,” a duet with Chris Norman of the group Smokie, was a tepid pop song that did not remotely hint at the fireball Quatro had once been in the UK. None of the four singles that followed was able to break into the American top 40, however; the last one appeared in 1981.

Recently, Suzi Quatro has been hosting a classic rock show on BBC Radio, and she still performs in Europe. Last fall, she released an album of new material called In the Spotlight.
