Bruce Springsteen Dedicates ‘American Skin (41 Shots)’ To Trayvon Martin

Bruce Springsteen is the latest musician to address the Trayvon Martin verdict.

At a concert in Ireland on Tuesday (July 16), the rocker dedicated his song “American Skin (41 Shots)” to the Florida teen who was shot to death on February 26, 2012.

According to The Star Ledger in New Jersey, Springsteen saw a sign in the crowd requesting the song, which he wrote after the 1999 police shooting death of unarmed 23-year-old Guinean immigrant, Amadou Diallo in New York City.

Later on in the show Springsteen found the sign again and grabbed it. Before launching into the song, he addressed the crowd: “I want to see this one out as a letter back home. For justice for Trayvon Martin.” (Watch the clip below.)

On it, he sings, “It’s no secret my friend/ You can get killed just for living in your American skin.”

Springsteen’s tribute came three days after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was cleared of all charges, including second-degree murder and manslaughter, in the shooting death of the 17-year-old.

At a recent show in Quebec, Stevie Wonder announced that he would not be playing in Florida, or any other state that upholds Stand Your Ground–a law that says a person may justifiably use force in self-defense if there is reasonable belief that they are being threatened–until the controversial 2005 statute was “abolished.”

Though Florida was the first state to pass an explicit Stand Your Ground law, more than 30 other states, including Texas, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Illinois, have some version of it on the books.
