Generally when legendary punk and alternative rock bands reunite for a U.S. festival, they do it for Coachella, which has boasted reunion sets by the Stooges, the Pixies, Pavement, Stone Roses and Blur in recent years. However, The Replacements, who have not performed since 1991, however, will return to the stage at three separate installments of the punk-heavy Riot Fest.

They’ll be playing the festival’s stops in Toronto (August 24-25), Chicago (September 13-15) and Denver (September 21-22).. The festival does not have the same lineup in each city, but The Replacements, Iggy & The Stooges and Rocket From The Crypt are performing at all three locations.

The Replacements reunited last fall for an EP, Songs For Slim, paying tribute to their former guitarist Slim Dunlap, and also raising funds to help him with his medical bills (he suffered a stroke last year). That EP features Replacements singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson (now a member of Guns N’ Roses), along with drummer Peter Anderson and guitarist Kevin Bowe (from Westerberg’s touring band) covering Dunlap’s “Busted Up,” Leon Payne’s “Lost Highway”, ”Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from the Broadway musical Gypsy and Gordon Lightfoot’s “I’m Not Sayin’.” Replacements drummer Chris Mars isn’t on that track, but contributed a solo version of Dunlap’s “Radio Hook Word Hit”. (Other musicians, too, have also rallied for Dunlap, with Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn, John Doe of X and Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan have recorded fund-raising one-off singles to help the cause.)
