A widely-held belief: Rush have some of rock’s most dedicated fans. A fact: Rush’s fans have launched campaigns over the band’s lack of recognition from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

At first glance, this year’s Rock Hall inductions seem to be the perfect storm for Rush. Not only is the Canadian prog-rock trio finally nominated for the first time since its eligibility in 1999 (25 years after the release of its self-titled debut), but this year marks the first time fans will have a vote – albeit a tiny one – to decide who is inducted.

Wired reports Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson as formerly stating, “I kind of like the status quo where they don’t really want us in there and we don’t really want to be there.” And yet, the band released a statement regarding the Rock Hall nod on its official website mere hours after the announcement. They were the only band to do so. It reads: “We are honored to be among the nominees for this year’s Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. We are especially thrilled for the many, many dedicated RUSH fans to whom this nomination is so very important.”

Notice the emphasis on who the nomination is important for – fans. The band focuses on its legions of devotees who have been become more and more embittered through the years over the Rock Hall’s snub.

A scan of Twitter’s popular #rockhall trending topic shows an overwhelming amount of Rush love. Hundreds of Rush fans urging others to participate in the fan vote. There seems to be a sense of optimism to Rush fans’ online campaign, despite the true reality of the fan vote – it counts as less than 1/600 of the voting body. Starting yesterday and ending December 5th, fans – most of them Rush lovers, no doubt – will vote at the Hall of Fame’s website for the nominees they’d like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class of 2013, which will be announced in mid-December.

It’s going to be one ugly, intense online campaign if Rush isn’t inducted.
