The folks at ExperienceHendrix are preparing a couple of new reissues to celebrate what would havebeen Jimi Hendrix’s 70th birthday. On July 10, the newly restored and expanded edition of Jimi Plays Berkeley will be available on BluRay and DVD. The film documents the two concerts Hendrix played at the Berkeley Community Theatre on Saturday, May 30, 1970. The new version will contain more than 15 minutes of previously unseen footage, including performances of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Machine Gun” and “Hear My Train A Comin’.”
Jimi Plays Berkeley will include the audio of Jimi’s complete second show from May 30, mixed in 5.1 surround sound. The setlist for that show includes “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun),” “Stone Free,” “Hey Joe,” “I Don’t Live Today,” “Foxey Lady,” “Purple Haze” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” That second show will be a separate release on CD and LP.
Not enough Hendrix for you? July 10 will also see the release of the film Voodoo Child on BluRay. Originally included as a DVD in the 2010’s West Coast Seattle Boy box set, the film is narrated in Hendrix’s own words, via his letters (read in the film by Bootsy Collins).
