Southern rock pioneers Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced the release of their 13th studio album, Last of a Dying Breed, to be released August 21 though Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records.

“We kind of went back old school this time,” founding guitarist Gary Rossington said in a statement. “All of us playing together in the studio as a band, tracking songs and creating licks. We had a lot of fun and the music really flowed for us, so that’s when you know you are on to something good. We can’t wait to let the fans hear these songs and play ’em live.”

The album will be the Rock Hall of Famers’ first in three years, since 2009’s God & Guns, which debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 chart. Last of a Dying Breed reunites Skynyrd with God & Guns producer Bob Marlette, who’s also produced the likes of Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s lineup has seen many incarnations, often tragically related to the death of band members. A 1977 plane crash took the lives of three members – Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines – and disbanded Lynyrd Skynyrd, until the late ’80s resurgence. Now the band finds a suitable replacement for deceased bassist Donald “Ean” Evan, who lost a battle to cancer in 2009 and had played with Skynyrd since 2001. Black Crowes bass player Johnny Colt, who plays on Last of a Dying Breed, has joined Lynyrd Skynyrd alongside core members Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant,Rickey Medlocke and longtime drummer Michael Cartellone.

“What else do you say to Medlocke, Rossington and Van Zant?” Colt mused in a release. “We’re talking southern rock royalty. We’re talking Lynyrd Skynyrd. The only thing out of my mouth was when and where!”

Lynyrd Skynyrd continues its current tour across North America and Europe through October, when they’ll headline the Simple Man southern rock cruise from Miami to Key West over Halloween weekend.
