FEAR Bassist Derf Scratch Dies (1951-2010)

derfscratch fear img FEAR Bassist Derf Scratch Dies (1951 2010) Born Frederick Milner (aka – Derf Scratch), he helped found the legendarily misanthropic and often times violent Los Angeles hardcore band [lastfm]FEAR[/lastfm].  Scratch along with [lastfm]FEAR[/lastfm] frontman, Lee Ving, formed the notoriously raucous punk band in 1977.  [lastfm]FEAR[/lastfm]’s performance on Saturday Night Live on Halloween of 1981, garnered a cult following and mythology of its own. Fan and friend, John Belushi, coordinated the infamous  SNL appearance which resulted in moshing, stage diving and even included attendance by [lastfm]Ian MacKaye[/lastfm] ([lastfm]Fugazi[/lastfm]/[lastfm]Minor Threat[/lastfm]).

Scratch left [lastfm]FEAR[/lastfm]  in 1982, shortly after they released their debut LP The Record. In [lastfm]FEAR[/lastfm]’s always-shifting lineup, one of his successors was future [lastfm]Red Hot Chili Pepper[/lastfm], [lastfm]Flea[/lastfm].

Scratch passed away at his home in Camarillo, California after an extended illness. He was 58.
