rollingstones2 Exile On Main Street Hits #2The reissue of the [lastfm]Rolling Stones [/lastfm]classic 1972 double album Exile on Main Street has debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Though the reissue hit number one in the U.K., it couldn’t wrestle the top spot from the latest Glee soundtrack in the U.S.

The new edition features 10 previously unreleased tracks such as “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass the Wine.” It was produced by the legendary Don Was and coincides with a new documentary about the album.

Exile was famously recorded in the summer of 1971 at Nellcôte, a mansion in Mediterranian France that had served as a Nazi headquarters in World War II. According to a recent interview with guitarist [lastfm]Keith Richards[/lastfm], the band’s French sojourn was “kind of Hitleresque.”

“It was hard work down there,” he told a radio station. “It was a bit like stoking the boilers. It was the height of the summer in the south of France and it did get pretty sticky down there, it had a dust floor.”
