The final performance night of this season’s American Idol took place on Tuesday night and featured tunes from[lastfm] U2 [/lastfm]and [lastfm]R.E.M[/lastfm].
The finalists, [lastfm]Lee DeWyze [/lastfm]and [lastfm]Crystal Bowersox[/lastfm], each sang three songs during the evening, including a producer’s choice and the tune they will release if they are chosen this year’s winner.
Tender-voiced rocker Lee DeWyze sang U2’s “Beautiful Day” as his potential first single. He also gave a rendition of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” as his producer’s choice.
The Idol judges were luke-warm on Lee’s versions of the songs. For “Everybody Hurts,” they thought he almost reached something special in parts, but wasn’t able to sustain it. For “Beautiful Day,” the judges generally agreed with the verdict given by Kara DioGuardi, who said he was swallowed up by the song.
