springsteen 0930091 Bruce Springsteen And Poet Robert Pinsky Talk Writing[lastfm]Bruce Springsteen[/lastfm] teamed up with former poet Laureate Robert Pinsky earlier this week to give students at New Jersey’s Fairleigh Dickinson University a glimpse into the creative process.

The two shared their thoughts on writing before a crowd of 400 with The Boss offering up acoustic renditions of “The River” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

“You react to your own history; you can’t help it,” Springsteen said. “I react to what I’ve done previously. I reject it and criticize it . . . and that pushes your work forward.”

He added, “You throw out the questions, and then you try to answer them. Good artists are always trying to ask the right questions.”

Pinsky also commented on his hands on approach to the craft.

“For me, it’s an awful lot like noodling at the piano, playing with colors, except it’s syllables,” he said. “I write with my voice. My voice box is my writing instrument.”
