Kelly Clarkson Drops Cigarette Sponsor

kellyclarkson Kelly Clarkson Drops Cigarette Sponsor[lastfm]Kelly Clarkson[/lastfm]’s upcoming show in Indonesia will no longer be sponsored by L.A. Lights cigarettes. According to a statement issued by the promoter earlier today, the sponsor has been pulled following protests from fans and anti-tobacco groups.

Local anti-smoking advocates had been calling on Clarkson to drop the sponsor. According to the Jakarta Globe, some Islamic groups were even considering declaring a religious edict against attending the show. A Facebook campaign was also started, asking the American Idol winner to get rid of the sponsor.

“If Kelly Clarkson goes ahead with the concert, she is by choice being a spokesman for the tobacco industry and helping them to market to children,” said Matt Myers, president of the U.S.-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Clarkson had originally indicated that the sponsorship could not be pulled. She wrote on her blog, “I refuse to cancel on my fans,” and added that she is not a smoker herself and does not advocate it.

Clarkson’s concert is scheduled to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on April 29.
